They don't have to be on the tower to have the effect, but, as you pointed out, the conversation was important. It was nice to have the conversation on the water tower, simply because it was somewhere new and the characters were living a real life, that didn't only include the apartment, record store, and ice cream shop. Though, they could have the conversation in the ice cream shop and more fun dorky stuff could happen there. It occurs to me that I thought there should be more scenes there.

I'm very excited that you are editing this story. I just loved it when you were writing it and I think it will appeal to a lot of people. It's not a treasure box, but it is old, maybe a puzzle box. He can't open it. He keeps dying until he either gets it opened and whatever is trying to keep him from getting it opened is defeated or until he gets the box replaced where it belongs. Maybe the grave of a priest to an angry god? It gives you a why! And maybe a goal. And in the end you either do or don't see what's in the box. It's like the pulp fiction suit case, no one really knows the contents ever, even though it's an important part of the story. Those stories are different kinds of stories. One feels much more dark and serious and the other far more sarcastic. The voice was appropriate for each one. You are right about consistency, though. It won't work if you bounce back and forth between the voices.
My Piper story is constantly changing voice. It's a real problem I was finding as I was editing (which has been set aside once again). I go from an narrator figure to being inside the characters head. I have to pick one and force myself to stay there.
Looking forward to NanoPrep! Maybe not every day calls for writing. But certainly a lot of them can. And don't make it a hours and hours of writing. That makes it dreaded. Maybe say "I'll write for 15 minutes before I start making dinner". Or "I've got 30 minutes to spare now, I'll write for 10 and then I'll watch YouTube before I have to leave". It doesn't have to be a long period of time. In fact short ones help a lot. You might find that 15 minutes wasn't enough, but it gave you something to think about as you stir the pasta sauce. You might want to get right back to the outline or idea then. Fifteen minutes is enough time to jot down a rough outline of something. Then another 15, another time, can be used to flesh it out a little, then a little more, then suddenly you have an outline to follow.

I did miss your weekend blog, but I think once a week is great! Good luck! I've even subbed in two different friends groups. Haha! One group is a church group who plays with no alcohol and takes the game very seriously (it's a game of chance for goodness sake, but they all believe that one person is a very skilled player), the other group sometimes doesn't finish the game because there is too much drinking. I think there is a happy medium.

Euchre is a card game that is popular in the Midwest. I only know a few people here who play, other than my family, and they all lived in the Midwest at some point. You keep score with the 5 cards. Each point you get you uncover a symbol on the 5 card with the other card. Obviously playing to 10. My aunts have a "dancing 5's" ritual, where they dance the 5's around and rub it in that they won. They win a lot. When a team loses, they give up their seats to the next team. It gets loud and it gets competitive. Lots to add to a story. :)Krista Noyeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14164812057242423196noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9041086302095067865.post-43863726822100820932018-05-11T03:35:54.098-07:002018-05-11T03:35:54.098-07:00That reminds me of a Halloween party I went to whe...That reminds me of a Halloween party I went to when I was about 10, where they played this complex dice game called Bunco. I'd never heard of it before, and never known anyone to play it since. I literally just looked up the rules to try to remember how it went. I had forgotten it was dice and not cards.
I think a relatively obscure game could be a fun addition to the tale. I love it.

My family has Oysters Rockefeller for a Thanksgiving side. I think that's unusual. We usually have a card table up and keep a game of Eucher going a lot of the time. Newcomers are required to sit in a hand or two, at least, and try to learn the game.
Also, now that the kids are teenagers they want to do Black Friday shopping so we are usually pouring through the giant stack of newspaper ads that get delivered on Thanksgiving morning. Then someone goes shopping, but gives up when the line is stupid long or they realized they needed to bring a tent just to be in line for the opening in the morning.
There are usually enough people in the house with the cooking and goings on to keep the door open no matter the temperature. Just because it's a weird thing to happen is fine. The only reason to find the why for it would be if it was part of the story. Your story is about what happens. I think the Why it happens can be a mystery. It's happening. It's weird. I can accept that it's just a weird phenomenon. Will they get to their destination? Will the be in the right world when they do? Those are the questions I'd be asking. Another journey story. :) Even if it's ...Aha! Another journey story. :) Even if it's poorly written, or written by a younger you anyway, it has bones. Use those to improve it. You aren't the same person you were 8 years ago (hopefully), your story will have also grown. Give it a go! Give it an outline and make it a serial.

Also, you don't have to write every minute of the day of travel. People sleep a lot on car rides. You can have the backseat passenger drift off and wake up at the next destination covered in sunflower seed shells that the front seat passenger was throwing out his open window, but came back in the back open window. (I did that to my sister once. I also woke her abruptly by pouring my root beer out the window, only for it to come back in the back window and waterboard her). They can be playing road trip games (find something that starts with "A", "airport! Yay!" now "B". Fade out, fade back in on Q (those are notoriously hard to find)). Or everyone is arguing about the next stop to make, fade out, fade in hours later on the same stupid argument, but the destination has been missed. Gloss over the boring, getting there stuff, and focus on the exciting things that happen on the way. Krista Noyeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14164812057242423196noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9041086302095067865.post-31002412443562832132018-03-01T07:56:24.177-08:002018-03-01T07:56:24.177-08:00Oh my gosh! I was thinking of a 6 degrees of separation type thing. I had a drawing all worked out where one character from each chapter would appear in another. The end tied everything together. The plot was a sort of first-wives club where women come together and be strong. I haven't abandoned it, but I haven't revisited it in a long time. I tend to write the story and use a nickname for it. This Nano was Piper's story. Nano 5 years ago was also Piper's story, even though it was a different book.
