Lagging Behind, but Gaining Ground

I'm still behind on my word count, but I think I'm slightly less behind now. Nobody panic, there's still time.

A thing I always struggle with is narrative voice. I've talked about this before. Basically, I find it hard to maintain the same voice throughout, especially when I'm aiming for it to have a little more personality than "They did this. They went over there." But I'll yoyo between flat/boring and pure sarcasm/breaking the fourth wall. I think I've finally found the right voice for Des. Because he needs to be all sarcasm and a little breaking the fourth wall. We are spending a lot of time in his head, after all.

Right now, I have a few plot points that need to happen, and I'm trying desperately to have them not all happen at once, but I had to let the story move forward a little, and hope that I could fill things in later. That's where we are now. I'll even share a little excerpt. If anyone's coming into this adventure late, it's relevant to note that Des is a vampire.

Poor Des has been though a lot in the past week. Today, he had a little run in with a serial killer who stabbed him with a meat hook. These things happen. And then it led to the following scene, which, at midnight at least, was the funniest damn thing ever:

I sat down on the edge of the bathtub and pulled my shirt up. Leaning back, I tried to get a good look at the puncture wound. I teetered for a second, lost my balance and fell into the bathtub. My head hit the porcelain with a crack.

If I were still human, this is how I would have died. Definitely. Fucking idiot.

I fully embraced being in the tub. There was no way I was getting out at the moment, anyway. With the blood bag propped against one shoulder, I slurped on it like a god damn Capri Sun. I patched up the wound with some gauze and tape and dropped the rest of the kit outside the bathtub. It wasn’t invited.

So there you have it. Right now I'm just trying to get my characters to interact in interesting ways, but they're not really cooperating. Claire is supposed to exist as like a foil, who challenges Des in some interesting way. But the dumb girl keeps forgetting to get a personality. And whose fault is that? Certainly not mine.

Anyway, that's it for today. See you Friday.

  1. If Claire does not have interesting to say go provocative or create a interesting problem that capri sun sipping bathtub boy can solve your the genius I just watch so if Claire does not make a move the story she has to die or leave abruptly and come back for some reason leave a hook so she can come back. If she is not interesting move on without her!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just a thought
